What's Actually on the Label?
Most people carefully read the ingredients of their food. But the ingredients in their shampoo, cream, or shower gel? Hardly anyone looks at those. Yet 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed directly into your bloodstream.
Time to take a critical look inside your bathroom cabinet.
1. Parabens — the Preservatives
Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) are widely used preservatives. They work very effectively — they stop all enzyme activity in the product. The problem? They continue to work on your skin and inside your body.
Through the skin, parabens are absorbed into the bloodstream and end up in your organs. In the long term, this can pose a risk to your health.
2. SLS — the Aggressive Cleanser
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (and variants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate) creates the foaming effect in shampoo and shower gel. But it is an aggressive cleanser that:
- Dries out the skin
- Damages the protective lipid layer
- Can cause irritation
- Is even used in industrial degreasers
3. Paraffin and Silicones — the Skin Silencers
Paraffin and silicones are used as "fats" in creams. In reality, they are petroleum-based products that:
- Clog the pores
- Break down natural skin oils
- Make the skin dependent (paraffin addiction)
- Have no nourishing effect whatsoever
4. Synthetic Fragrances and Phthalates
That lovely scent in your body lotion? Often synthetic. These fragrances are poorly biodegradable, can cause skin irritation, and are toxic in high doses. Phthalates — plasticisers also found in plastic — are often used to fix the fragrance, and they disrupt your hormones.
With synthetic fragrance, a cheap, worthless product can still smell "wonderful."
5. PEG Compounds — the Silent Intruders
PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) is a synthetic emulsifier that makes the skin barrier more permeable. This allows harmful substances to enter your body more easily. PEG compounds are also used in antifreeze and brake fluid.
How Do You Recognise These Substances?
Check the INCI list on your products. Pay special attention to:
- Anything with paraben in the name
- Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate
- Paraffinum, Petrolatum, Mineral Oil
- PEG followed by a number
- Dimethicone (silicones)
The Alternative Exists
Pure, natural products like those from Botanical Beauty contain none of these substances. Instead: plant-based oils, herbs, and organic ingredients that truly care for your skin.
